Glowing, radiant skin isn’t just a result of expensive skincare products and elaborate beauty routines—it starts from within. As a double board certified facial plastic surgeon, I’ve seen firsthand how diet and lifestyle can profoundly impact the health and appearance of your skin pre- and post-facelift and other procedures. Here are some expert tips from my own personal experiences as well as my patient’s experiences on cultivating healthy habits that promote glowing skin.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

One of the simplest and most effective ways to achieve glowing skin is staying hydrated. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps flush out toxins and improve skin elasticity. Shoot for at least eight glasses of water a day; I recommend incorporating some kind of electrolyte packet as well!

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

There are numerous food groups known for improving skin health and hydration! A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides essential nutrients! For example, foods high in antioxidants, like berries, tomatoes, and dark leafy greens, help protect the skin, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts help maintain skin hydration and reduce inflammation.

3. Limit Sugar and Processed Foods

High-sugar and processed foods wreak havoc on your skin, leading to inflammation, acne breakouts, and premature aging. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible, and limit your intake of sugary snacks, sodas, and refined carbohydrates. Instead, satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh fruit or small portions of dark chocolate.

4. Get Your Beauty Sleep

Quality sleep is essential for skin regeneration and repair. During sleep, the body produces collagen, a protein that helps keep the skin firm and youthful. You want to aim for 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and establish a regular bedtime routine to promote restful sleep.

5. Use Sun Protection

Excessive sun exposure is one of the leading causes of premature aging and skin damage. It’s imperative you protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

6. Manage Stress

Chronic stress can have a negative impact on skin health, leading to increased oil production, inflammation, and acne breakouts. Practice stress-reducing techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, etc. Prioritize self-care activities that promote relaxation and mental well-being, and avoid your stress triggers as much as possible.

Achieving glowing, healthy skin requires more than just topical treatments; protecting your skin from the inside out. By adopting a balanced diet, staying hydrated, prioritizing sleep, protecting your skin from the sun, and managing stress, you can cultivate healthy habits that support radiant skin for years to come. Remember, true beauty starts from within.
