IPL in Tampa & The Villages, FL
By Dr. Richard Castellano, Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a popular light-based treatment that can address various skin concerns without downtime. At ImageLift®, Dr. Castellano offers IPL therapy as well as other laser treatments to residents of Tampa Bay, including those in St. Pete, Clearwater, Ocala and the surrounding areas of Central Florida.
What is IPL Therapy?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses the power of broadband light to improve the appearance of sunspots, rosacea, age spots, and pigmentation. It uses powerful bursts of light, which are filtered to exclude any harmful wavelengths (such as ultraviolet waves), and kept within the appropriate range to heat up and eliminate targeted cells. Unlike other light therapies, particularly laser treatments for skin resurfacing, IPL causes minimal damage to the skin. This makes it one of the safest treatment alternatives to laser skin resurfacing, while also offering minimal downtime.
What are the Benefits of IPL?
IPL therapy is a great option for patients seeking a rejuvenation treatment with little to no downtime, as it offers many benefits that include:
- Safety: The wavelengths of light used for IPL exclude harmful wavelengths to minimize damage to the skin.
- Customizability: The IPL light can be filtered to optimize the treatment for your skin type, reducing side effects while maximizing treatment benefits.
- No Downtime: IPL therapy requires no downtime because it causes minimal damage to the skin. You’ll be able to resume your normal routine immediately following treatment.
What is the IPL Treatment Like?
Before beginning IPL therapy, we will apply a cooling gel to the treatment area, which helps minimize any discomfort that may occur during treatment. Then, we’ll glide the IPL handpiece over the treatment area, delivering rapid pulses of light to the skin. You might feel a slight warming sensation with each pulse. This treatment can take between 30 minutes and an hour, or perhaps longer depending on the size of the treatment area.
Is There Any Downtime After IPL Treatments?
There is no required downtime after IPL therapy. You may experience temporary redness and warmth in the treated area that resolves within a few hours. We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure for at least one week post-treatment. Otherwise, you can resume all regular activities immediately.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from IPL Treatment?
The results from IPL therapy will develop gradually in the weeks following your treatment, with final results becoming visible approximately 4-6 weeks later. While many patients notice impressive results after just one treatment, we typically recommend 2-5 IPL sessions (spaced four weeks apart) for optimal results. If you are treating severe skin damage or discoloration, as many as 10 treatment sessions may be necessary.
