Hi, I’m Dr. K! I’m a board certified facial plastic surgeon, and today I’m here to discuss my thoughts about the 2024 total solar eclipse. In these times of complete darkness and total blackout, it’s super important to remember the possible damaging effects of UV radiation and sun exposure.

Regardless of where you’re located, but especially in Florida where we are, there is extremely strong ultraviolet radiation from sun exposure, and it’s imperative to stay ahead of the damaging effects as much as possible. We do this by using sunscreen!

I recommend daily using an ultra protective sunscreen with an SPF greater than 50 – the higher the better! If, however, you’ve already had years of detrimental sun exposure, there are some ways that our team here at ImageLift can help. We offer a variety of laser resurfacing procedures that can improve the quality of your skin.

CO2 Laser

The CO2 laser treatment is considered to be the gold standard of skin resurfacing treatments, as it provides some of the most dramatic results in improving skin tone and texture. CO2 lasers use light energy to remove thin layers of skin tissue. It is highly customizable, as it can be adjusted for the optimal treatment of various skin types, treatment areas, skin concerns, and treatment goals. The CO2 laser resurfacing process can eliminate imperfections to reveal brighter, healthier skin. Additionally, it stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin to provide further rejuvenation benefits in the months following treatment. The CO2 laser treatment targets conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities.

Erbium Laser

The Erbium laser is a laser resurfacing treatment that uses targeted laser energy to remove the outer layers of damaged skin, revealing healthier and younger-looking skin below. It’s often called the “lunchtime laser peel” because it provides results comparable to more aggressive laser treatments but with less recovery time. This laser is unique because it focuses laser energy into a narrower area compared to other laser treatments, which results in a more focused removal of old skin cell layers with much higher precision. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, and hands to address concerns like lines and wrinkles, scars, and uneven pigmentation. The Erbium laser also stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin for further rejuvenation over time.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses the power of broadband light to improve the appearance of sunspots, rosacea, age spots, and pigmentation. It uses powerful bursts of light, which are filtered to exclude any harmful wavelengths (such as ultraviolet waves), and kept within the appropriate range to heat up and eliminate targeted cells. Unlike other light therapies, particularly laser treatments for skin resurfacing, IPL causes minimal damage to the skin. This makes it one of the safest treatment alternatives to laser skin resurfacing, while also offering minimal downtime.
